Are your website images helping or hindering your business?

“A picture is worth a thousand words”

Everyone knows the saying so it should be no surprise that images on your website are very important to your business success online. Images have the power to entice and excite but if used incorrectly, they can also hinder your website. In this short article I am going to explain why getting your website images right is important for your business and a few ways you can achieve image mastery.

Trust me…I’m legit.

Trust is a big factor for businesses online. We have all heard internet horror stories so most of us have learned to be quite wary online. We subconsciously and consciously look for indicators of trust and the moment we notice something that makes us uncomfortable, we leave. Therefore, it is imperative that your website projects a reputation of professionalism and trust-worthiness. And guess what? Your images play a key role in that.

Sell the dream

OK – enough doom and gloom. There is actually a much more positive and powerful reason to make sure your images look great: sell the dream! Amazing images can very often excite and entice people into becoming customers. Although you might not realise it, often your business is the exact thing your customer has been dreaming about. Not convinced? Let me give you a few examples:

  • Landscape Designers – People dream about having a beautiful garden and enjoying it with family and friends. Use amazing pictures of your work.
  • Physiotherapists – People dream of being free from their injuries and maybe even successful in sport. Use images of people being free, mobile and athletic.
  • Mechanics – People have the car dream: cruising down route 66, windows down, music playing and free to drive.

You get the picture (no pun intended). Figure out what dream your business is selling and then use images to sell it.

Where should you get your pictures from?

There are a few ways to get pictures. Which one you choose is up to you.

Hire a professional photographer

If you are trying to sell the dream and get the best possible outcome, a professional photographer is the best way to do it. It’s amazing how a pro can make just an average image look amazing. I highly recommend hiring a photographer for businesses that offer creative or tangible services such as landscapers, interior designers, artists, architects etc. However in reality, any profession will look their best with professional photographs. If price is a concern, remember that you do have the option to get just a few images done for your homepage and your portfolio. Then you can use one of the other methods for the remaining photos on your website.

Stock Photography

The second best option is to use stock photography. As the name suggests, stock photographs are generic images in your desired profession taken by professional photographers. They are a great and feasible alternative to hiring a professional. If you do use them, try and make sure you choose images that aren’t too generic. Instead use images specifically for your profession.

Take your own photographs

Finally, you can take pictures yourself. In terms of projecting a professional image, this method is a little risky because people’s photographic skills vary from person to person. However, here are a couple of tips:

  • Use the best camera you can find
  • Double check your photos to make sure they are in focus.
  • Shoot photos in landscape orientation instead of portrait orientation

Lastly, I recommend seeking honest feedback from a designer about whether or not your photographs project a professional and reputable image. Although feedback can sometimes be hard to hear, your business goals are most important so it is important to get the images right.

Conclusion

The images on your website are there to support your business, so it is important to consider whether they are helping you achieve your goals or not. They should help your business look professional, trust-worthy and reputable. And if you aren’t doing it already, use images to sell the dream!
